Recovery Time, Explained

A tip that's still moving when the clubhead reaches the ball is a timing problem dressed up as a swing flaw.

Deflection gets most of the attention in shaft fitting conversations because it's the easiest number to picture — how far the tip bends under load. Recovery time gets discussed far less often, even though it's arguably just as important: how quickly that bent tip straightens back out once the load releases.

What Recovery Time Measures

When a shaft's tip is loaded and then released, it doesn't snap back instantly — it oscillates, gradually settling back toward straight over a measurable span of time. Our rig captures that span directly, clamping the tip section, applying a load, then timing how long the recovery takes before the section settles.

Why the Timing Matters

A downswing gives a shaft a specific, narrow window to load and unload before the clubhead reaches the ball. If a tip's recovery time is slower than that window allows, the section can still be partway through its release at impact — which shows up as inconsistent face angle and delivered loft, even on strikes that felt clean. If recovery happens too quickly, the tip can finish unloading early and hand back less of its stored energy than it's capable of.

Recovery time isn't about fast or slow in the abstract. It's about whether the tip finishes its job inside the window your downswing actually gives it.

How This Differs From Deflection Alone

Two shafts can show nearly identical deflection numbers under the same load and still recover at different speeds. Testing deflection without recovery time is only half the picture — it tells you how far the tip moves, not how quickly it gets back to neutral, which is the half that actually lines up with your specific transition timing.

The Takeaway

If a shaft has ever produced inconsistent face angle despite feeling stable in your hands, recovery time relative to your transition speed is worth ruling out. It's a timing match, not a strength match, and it rarely shows up on a standard spec sheet at all.
