The Tip Zone Is Not the Flex Letter
Two shafts can share a flex label and behave nothing alike where it counts.
Ask most golfers what makes a shaft "Stiff" and they'll point to the sticker. Ask a manufacturer how that sticker gets decided, and the answer is less precise than the label implies: an average resistance to bending, measured across the shaft's full length, then rounded into one of five or six broad categories. That average can hide enormous variation in the one section that matters most for delivered loft — the tip zone.
What the Tip Zone Actually Is
The tip zone is the terminal six to eight inches of a shaft, closest to where the head gets installed. It's the section that bends latest and recovers fastest through the downswing, and its stiffness is what largely determines how much loft actually gets delivered at impact — not the static loft stamped on the sole of the club.
A shaft can be stiff overall and still carry a comparatively soft tip, or the reverse: firm at the tip with more give in the middle section. Averaged together, both could round to the same "Stiff" label on a spec sheet, and a golfer swinging either one would feel a genuinely different club.
Why This Gets Missed
Most fitting conversations start with the label because it's the fastest shorthand available. "You're a Stiff guy" is a quick sentence. It's also an approximation built for convenience, not precision — useful for narrowing a wall of hundreds of shafts down to a reasonable starting point, but not precise enough to finish the job on its own.
The flex letter tells you where to start looking. It was never built to tell you where to stop.
How We Read It Instead

That isolates tip deflection from the whole-shaft average, so we can see directly whether a given shaft's tip matches your transition speed and load timing — rather than inferring it from a label that was never built to answer that question precisely.
The Takeaway
If a shaft has ever felt wrong despite matching your "correct" flex on paper, the tip zone is worth ruling out before assuming the whole shaft category is the problem. Sometimes the fix isn't a different flex at all — it's the same flex letter with a different tip.
