Whole-Shaft Frequency vs. a Tip-Only Reading

One CPM number can average away exactly the detail you need to see.

Whole-shaft frequency — a shaft's oscillation rate in cycles per minute when clamped at the butt and set swinging — is one of the oldest and most widely used numbers in club fitting. It's genuinely useful. It's also, on its own, an average that can quietly hide the exact mismatch a golfer is trying to solve.

How Whole-Shaft Frequency Is Measured

The shaft is clamped near the butt end and set oscillating, and the rate of that oscillation gets recorded as a single CPM figure. It's fast, repeatable, and useful for comparing shafts of the same model and length against each other — which is exactly why it's become the industry standard shorthand.

What It Doesn't Show

Because the measurement captures the shaft's behavior as a whole, it blends stiffness contributions from the butt, middle, and tip sections into one number. Two shafts can post nearly identical whole-shaft frequency readings while carrying meaningfully different tip stiffness — one slightly stiffer through the middle with a softer tip, the other more even throughout. A single CPM figure can't tell those two shafts apart, even though a golfer's hands often can.

Averages are useful for comparison. They're the wrong tool when the question is about one specific six-inch section of the shaft.

How a Tip-Only Reading Fills the Gap

Our rig runs a second test alongside the standard frequency check: clamping closer to the tip and applying a load specifically at that section, isolating it from the rest of the profile. Comparing the two readings together — whole-shaft frequency and tip-only deflection — shows us whether a shaft's stiffness is evenly distributed or concentrated in a way the single CPM number would never reveal on its own.

The Takeaway

Whole-shaft frequency is a good first filter, not a complete answer. If two shafts test identically on CPM but feel different in your hands, a tip-only reading is usually where that difference shows up — and it's a check worth insisting on before ruling either shaft in or out.
